Computer Science Integration (CSI) Workshop

Is it better to offer students a CS Elective or to integrate CS into a Science Course?

When a school only offers students a CS elective course to experience CS, then only the students who take that course learn what computer science is really about. By offering CS Integrated into other courses, such as within Science, then all students can begin to see how computer science is used within STEM career fields. All it takes is 2-3 Computer Science Integration lessons wihin each science course in middle school for students to begin to see how computer science is used by professional scientists and engineers, and to equip them to decide if computer science is a course they would like to pursue in high school.

This is a two session workshop, both in person at the Sacramento County Office of Education.

Session 1  = Wednesday, March 18, 2026

Session 2 = Monday, April 20, 2026

The registration fee includes both sessions, be sure to register for both dates.

One of the best ways to use computer science concepts to support the learning of science is by integrating CS through the use of the micro:bit within physical computing lessons and projects. In this 2-day workshop, teachers will gain a suite of micro:bit lessons including topics:

  • Measuring Roller Coaster Speed
  • Machine Learning Application
  • Mimicking Fireflies
  • Infection
  • Measuring Human Reaction Speed
  • Earthquake Safety
  • and more!

CSI will provide the Secondary Educator with:

  • Learn about the micro:bit device, its features, and how to use it within classroom instruction.
  • An opportunity to engage in model lessons that use CS Concepts to support the learning of Science/math that will make content relevant for students.
  • Take-home materials, including 10 micro:bits and consumables
  • An opportunity to meet a community of peers who share an interest in hands-on CS Integration.
  • Take-home materials, including 10 micro:bits and consumables
  • Substitute reimbursement for classroom coverage during workshops

If your plans have changed and you cannot attend, or if you have questions about Substitute reimbursement, please get in touch with Jessie Heidrich (jheidrich@scoe.net).

Please note that if you do NOT cancel 5 days before the event date, your district will be invoiced if you have not already paid.
