EPiCC Summer Series: ELD Standards Part II: Learning How English Works
Please note: This offering will be held in Glenn County.
One of the California’s Reading & Literature Project signature professional learning programs, Learning How English Works (LHEW) dives deeply into Part II of the California English Language Development Standards, orienting teachers to the theoretical underpinnings of the Standards, breaking down each of the seven standards, and providing linguistically responsive routines that invite students to interact with the language of grade-level disciplinary texts to better understand how writers use language to achieve a range of purposes.
The program prepares teachers to incorporate focused, context-embedded language lessons into their content instruction. More specifically, the LHEW program builds teachers’ capacity to:
-
Consider classroom language demands connected to the CA ELD standards
-
Gain a deeper understanding of the text, sentence, and word level academic language of Part II of the California English Language Development Standards
-
Participate in an instructional routine sequence for teaching language
-
Experience strategies for teaching text, sentence, and word level language
-
Practice the Student Work Analysis Protocol (SWAP) with a focus on language to set learning goals
-
Examine how the protocols, strategies, and routines discussed fit into an existing curriculum
The Learning How English Works professional learning program is appropriate for K-5, 6-12, and Designated ELD teachers, as well as school and district administrators.
