Joyful Literacy STATEWIDE Institute

Description: This state-wide institute focuses on supporting educators to implement joyful, evidence-based, and standards-aligned literacy instruction for children in preschool through first grade. Participants will learn how to establish a caring and playful literacy learning environment and implement comprehensive instruction that addresses all five themes of the California ELA/ELD Framework: meaning making, effective expression, language development, foundational skills, and content knowledge. During the institute, participants will use California’s ELA/ELD Framework, ELA and ELD Standards, Preschool and Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations, and P-3 Learning Progressions. Family engagement, with home literacy activities available in nine different languages, will also be in focus.

Materials: Participants will receive six children’s trade books and their accompanying Joyful Literacy “book kits,” available in English and Spanish. Each book kit centers a culturally affirming children’s storybook and includes a week-long sequence of lessons that support the development of listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, creative expression, social-emotional skills, and ELD.

Objectives: Participants will learn how to …

  • establish a caring, playful, and culturally affirming literacy learning environment
  • implement evidenced-based and comprehensive early literacy instruction
  • support a wide range of children’s development and learning needs
  • integrate social-emotional learning and arts education with literacy instruction
