Learn at Lunch- Facilitated by Artist and Activist Milton Bowens

Milton will start by conducting a brief brainstorm where he will articulate how guests can create a metaphor visually. He will explain how to take an issue related to teaching/education and break it down into the different aspects that constitute their topic. Bowens will refer to his painting and reference other examples from historical and first hand observations. Once everyone has identified a topic they want to explore, Bowens will guide participants in reviewing the materials available for creating a mixed media project. Basic classroom supplies will be provided, including colored pencils, markers, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, colored construction paper, and educational photocopies (clip art). Bowens will demonstrate how these materials interact and react when combined to form a cohesive composition. Additionally, he will highlight symbolic elements in his own paintings to inspire participants and help them infuse deeper meaning into their mixed media artwork. Bowen’s piece “Homework Assignment” belongs to the private collection of Mrs. Jasmin Martinez (SCOE Arts Integration Coordinator) and was a part of his highly acclaimed “Art of Education Collection” with works from the collection belonging to the collections of UC Davis, Laney College St. Hope Public Schools and McGorge School of Law. and various private collectors. This collection was also featured in the Sacramento Bee, Oakland Tribune and San Joaquin Valley Sun.
