Academic Songwriting: Creating Informative Songs in ELA and Science
What if your students could sing their way to stronger comprehension? In this interactive session, learn how Academic Songwriting turns science and ELA content into songs co-created with students—boosting engagement, creativity, and standards-based learning. Explore a five-step process—Explore, Brainstorm, Write, Sing, Move—accessible to any educator, no musical background required. Guide lyric writing, add movement, and use music to build comprehension, social-emotional skills, and classroom community. Leave ready to help students create joyful songs that stick long after the lesson ends.
Sam’s primary directive as a teaching artist is to help students grow and learn in an engaging, healing, and rigorous way. He holds a B.A. in English Literature from Lewis and Clark College, a Social Emotional Arts Certificate from UCLArts & Healing, and has received 100+ hours of training in mindfulness and Nonviolent Communication.
