A Practice-Based STEAM Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

From soaring seeds to sail-powered cars, wind invites children to wonder, test, and discover. In this practice-based workshop, educators will explore playful ways to use wind as a force for learning — sparking curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving in young learners.

This interactive session follows our proven structure:

• 45-Minute Engaging Presentation — Discover how wind play connects to STEAM concepts like force, lift, motion, and design.

• 15-Minute Video Reflection — See wind-powered learning in action and discuss strategies to bring it to life.

• 60-Minute Tinker & Take — Create hands-on wind exploration tools you can bring back to your program the very next day.

You’ll leave with:

• A deeper understanding of how wind builds early science, engineering, and math skills.

• Ready-to-use activities — from flying seeds to floating balls to sail-powered cars.

• Materials and ideas you can implement right away in your classroom or program.

This professional learning opportunity provides an introduction to systems thinking and its application in the workplace. Organizations achieve better results when people understand not only what is happening, but why it is happening. Through hands-on, experiential activities and real-world application, participants will connect systems thinking to their current work, gaining practical strategies for recognizing patterns, understanding interdependencies, and identifying opportunities for meaningful change. This series also serves as the foundation for those interested in continuing their learning leadership development using a systems approach.

This training contains 3 sessions over the fall semester. Please ensure you are able to attend all three dates prior to committing to the training.

How Paraprofessionals Can Support the Communication of Students Using Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Are you a paraprofessional who works with students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)? Ever wonder how you can help support your students' communication? Well, this is the training for you. We will start with an overview of AAC. Then we will dive deep into two research-based techniques to support communication. First, we will discuss augmented language input. What it is and why it is essential for your students. Next, we will talk about storybook interactions and how to get the most out of them. Plenty of examples and opportunities to practice will be provided.

Universal Design for Learning - Part 2: Engagement, Representation, and Assessment Choice Boards

Take your understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to the next level by exploring practical strategies that increase student engagement, accessibility, and success. In this hands-on session, participants will dive deeper into the three pillars of UDL and learn how to design meaningful choice boards that support diverse learning needs. You'll leave with ready-to-use templates, examples, and access to a comprehensive UDL resource Padlet filled with tools to enhance instruction for all learners.

• Explore a variety of choice boards and discover how important they are in the UDL framework
• Engage in instruction on how to create choice boards in all three pillars (engagement, action & expression, and assessment)
• Receive access to a UDL Padlet that is full of resources, templates, examples, videos, and suggested reading materials

The California Department of Education, Special Education Division is pleased to announce trainingin preparation for the upcoming collection of data for students with disabilities in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS): CALPADS Special Education Data 2026-27.

This is a hybrid training, and you may attend in person or via Zoom. 

These sessions will train local special education data coordinators and Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA)-level staff on the updates and changes for the CALPADS Fall 1 Submission as well as other special education-related data. The training will cover:

•    Fall 1 CALPADS Data Submission and Reports
•    What’s new for Fall 1
•    State Performance Plan (SPP)/Annual Performance Report Indicators using Fall 1 data
•    Data for Annual Determinations Letter (ADL)
•    Monitoring Reports and Holding Timely Meetings

The Federal Monitoring Process provides an opportunity to deeply understand the minimum requirements to meet the needs of students who are English Learners/Multilingual Learners and students who have barriers that may get in the way of accessing an equitable education. The Sacramento County Office of Education is pleased to host representatives from the Technical Assistance Monitoring Office (TAMO) and the Title I Monitoring Support Office (TIMSO) from the California Department of Education to delineate effective ways to provide these supports.  

Participants will:

• Obtain the latest information regarding English learner monitoring process including EL Program Evaluation, ELD, student placement, ELAC, and more. 

• Review frequent findings on the English Learner (EL) and the Compensatory Education (CE) instruments and understand how to avoid these findings.

• Learn more about the current requirements in the FPM instrument for the EL and CE programs, including the parent notifications with program options requirements. 

• Have the opportunity to ask CDE staff questions about EL and CE compliance-related issues, and to ensure quality of evidence.

Title I and Title III Technical Assistance Workshop

Get a comprehensive overview of California's Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP), including legal requirements, funding, quality standards, and the administrator's role in supporting successful implementation.

This session goes beyond traditional time management tips to explore what it means to be productive—not just busy. Participants will examine how workplace culture, competing priorities, and common work habits impact how we spend our time, while learning strategies to work more effectively. Through techniques like task management, time blocking, strategic calendaring, and productivity best practices, you'll discover how to take control of your workday, focus on what matters, and accomplish more with less stress.

The institute brings together the principles of the Inclusive Early Education Expansion Program (IEEEP) and Joyful Literacy to strengthen equitable, inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate practices in early learning environments. Designed for preschool educators, administrators, and support staff serving three- and four-year-olds, this initiative centers on fostering joyful, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning experiences for all children—particularly those with disabilities and diverse learning needs. 

Through a series of interactive activities, coaching and collaborative learning opportunities embedded in the professional learning sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of how to create literacy-rich environments that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning, while also embedding inclusive practices that ensure every child has access to high-quality early education. The integration of Joyful Literacy emphasizes play-based, language-rich instruction that supports emergent reading, writing, and communication skills in authentic and meaningful ways. 

Aligned with the goals of IEEEP, this initiative supports programs in expanding access to inclusive settings by equipping educators with practical strategies for universal design for learning (UDL) and collaborative teaming with families and specialists. Participants will explore how to intentionally design instruction and environments that honor children’s identities, strengths, and developmental variability. 

Key focus areas include: 

·       Creating joyful, engaging literacy experiences grounded in play and inquiry 

·       Implementing inclusive practices that support participation and belonging for all children 

·       Using strategies for universal design for learning (UDL) and collaborative teaming with families, general education, special education, and related service providers to support children’s learning and development 

By combining the strengths of Joyful Literacy with the vision of inclusive early education, this statewide effort seeks to build educator capacity, expand access to high-quality inclusive programs, and ensure every young learner thrives in a welcoming and empowering environment.

Calling all high school counselors, high school administrators, CTE directors/coordinators and CALPADS specialists! Join us for a training on the link between CALPADS and the CA Dashboard’s Graduation Rate and College Career Indicators (CCI). We will review the criteria for each indicator, how these indicators rely on your CALPADS data, and how to ensure that your data is accurate. We’ll also explore reports and tools that can help teams review, assess, and verify cohort-level and individual students’ progress towards graduation and CCI readiness.

Literacy Coaches/Reading Specialists/Interventionists/Literacy Lead Teachers will collaborate across four sessions a year facilitated by LCRSET Hub Leads to hone their literacy content knowledge and coaching skills. These sessions will provide opportunities for participants to support their sites with the implementation and monitoring of their Literacy Plan goals and actions.

Coaches/Reading Specialists/Interventionists/Literacy Lead Teachers will explore practices tailored to address the unique needs of different contexts. There will be ample time for sharing successes, collectively solving problems of practice, and networking with peers. Through this dynamic and enriching professional development experience, Coaches/Reading Specialists/Interventionists/Literacy Lead Teachers will deepen their expertise, develop strategies, and acquire specific tools to effectively guide their school sites in achieving their literacy objectives. The collaborative nature of the sessions, including opportunities for networking, will foster the exchange of ideas and collective problem-solving to drive continuous improvement in support of student literacy growth.

This statewide training session is designed to help business-area administrators audit critical CALPADS Fall 1 reports used for LCFF and other funding purposes. This session translates technical reporting requirements into clear, business-relevant concepts for cross-departmental data teams, breaking down the business rules behind each column, highlighting common red flags that signal potential issues, and providing practical guidance for verifying data at the source. Emphasizing real-world application, this session equips participants to connect CALPADS data to local systems and processes, enabling stronger cross-departmental collaboration, earlier identification of issues, and greater confidence in state and federal reporting.

The Capitol Area Regional Transformational Assistance Center (R-TAC) provides a virtual workshop for district staff who are implementing community schools through the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP). These sessions provide district leaders with a collaborative space to navigate the complexities of scaling community schools systems. Grounded in the Community Schools Framework, participants will engage in practical problem-solving, peer learning, and continuous improvement cycles to address local challenges, test strategies, and refine solutions aligned to district goals. 

Overview: The New Coordinator Support Sessions will provide an opportunity for new California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and English Language Assessments for California (ELPAC) coordinators (in their job for three years or less) to receive small group support from experienced coordinators.

The LEA assessment coordinator position has a huge learning curve, including many deadlines and few, if any, ‘job alikes’ within a district. The sessions will be guided by the activities listed in the Coordinator Checklist and will include other timely activities. The support sessions will be offered monthly via Zoom. These sessions will be co-facilitated by SCOE and PCOE LEA coordinators. The facilitators will help address questions and offer support. These support sessions are designed to provide new LEA assessment coordinators an opportunity to connect with other coordinators, build community and to ask questions related to their job in a small group setting.
