A Pyramid Model Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

•       Focuses on using Positive Descriptive Feedback (PDF) in playful, practical ways to show children what they did right, why it matters, and how it connects to classroom expectations.

Follows a 3-part structure:

•       55-Minute Tinker and Take — Hands-on practice where you’ll create ready-to-use feedback prompts, visuals, and classroom reminders.

Shine & Shadow: Illuminating STEAM Learning
A Practice-Based STEAM Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

Light and shadow capture children’s curiosity — from the glow of a flashlight to the dance of shadows on the wall. In this practice-based workshop, educators will explore playful ways to use light and shadow to spark investigation, storytelling, and problem-solving in young learners.

This interactive session follows our proven structure:

• 45-Minute Engaging Presentation — Discover how light and shadow support STEAM concepts such as observation, comparison, and creative expression.

• 15-Minute Video Reflection — Watch real-world examples of children experimenting with light and shadow, then reflect on what you notice.

• 60-Minute Tinker & Take — Create hands-on light and shadow exploration tools you can bring back to your program the very next day.

You’ll leave with:

• A deeper understanding of how light and shadow build science, math, and creative thinking skills.

• Ready-to-use activities — from shadow drawing to colored light play to story-based light boxes.

• Materials and ideas to implement immediately in your classroom or program.

From soaring seeds to sail-powered cars, wind invites children to wonder, test, and discover. In this practice-based workshop, educators will explore playful ways to use wind as a force for learning — sparking curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving in young learners.

This interactive session follows our proven structure:

• 45-Minute Engaging Presentation — Discover how wind play connects to STEAM concepts like force, lift, motion, and design.

• 15-Minute Video Reflection — See wind-powered learning in action and discuss strategies to bring it to life.

• 60-Minute Tinker & Take — Create hands-on wind exploration tools you can bring back to your program the very next day.

You’ll leave with:

• A deeper understanding of how wind builds early science, engineering, and math skills.

• Ready-to-use activities — from flying seeds to floating balls to sail-powered cars.

• Materials and ideas you can implement right away in your classroom or program.

Outcomes

• Identify how play supports social and emotional development and self-regulation.

• Understand how the environment supports children’s behavior.

• Discuss how big body play supports social and emotional, cognitive, and language development.

Stipends:         $300 stipend available for staff supporting California State Preschool Program (CSPP) Programs attending all sessions (no partial stipends)

The institute brings together the principles of the Inclusive Early Education Expansion Program (IEEEP) and Joyful Literacy to strengthen equitable, inclusive, engaging, and developmentally appropriate practices in early learning environments. Designed for preschool educators, administrators, and support staff serving three- and four-year-olds, this initiative centers on fostering joyful, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning experiences for all children—particularly those with disabilities and diverse learning needs. 

Through a series of interactive activities, coaching and collaborative learning opportunities embedded in the professional learning sessions, participants will deepen their understanding of how to create literacy-rich environments that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning, while also embedding inclusive practices that ensure every child has access to high-quality early education. The integration of Joyful Literacy emphasizes play-based, language-rich instruction that supports emergent reading, writing, and communication skills in authentic and meaningful ways. 

Aligned with the goals of IEEEP, this initiative supports programs in expanding access to inclusive settings by equipping educators with practical strategies for universal design for learning (UDL) and collaborative teaming with families and specialists. Participants will explore how to intentionally design instruction and environments that honor children’s identities, strengths, and developmental variability. 

Key focus areas include: 

·       Creating joyful, engaging literacy experiences grounded in play and inquiry 

·       Implementing inclusive practices that support participation and belonging for all children 

·       Using strategies for universal design for learning (UDL) and collaborative teaming with families, general education, special education, and related service providers to support children’s learning and development 

By combining the strengths of Joyful Literacy with the vision of inclusive early education, this statewide effort seeks to build educator capacity, expand access to high-quality inclusive programs, and ensure every young learner thrives in a welcoming and empowering environment. 

This statewide professional learning opportunity is funded by CDE, facilitated by the Sacramento County Office of Education Early Learning Department and hosted by Solano County Office of Education.

Select one 3 hour in-person session - Integrating UDL into lesson planning & circle time

In this 2-part series you’ll sharpen your UDL skills during lesson planning to support ALL students in your inclusive classroom. Consortium members receive a $300 stipend for completing parts 1 and 2.

Building the Foundation: Creating Community with Expectations and Rules
A Pyramid Model Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

• Focuses on helping children understand and follow expectations and rules as part of a positive classroom community.
• Covers key strategies for teaching expectations, creating rules with children, using visuals, and reinforcing positive behavior.
• Follows a 3-part structure:
o 45-Minute Interactive Presentation — Evidence-based practices for teaching expectations and building community.
o 15-Minute Video Reflection — Real-world examples of expectations in action with guided discussion.
o 55-Minute Tinker and Take — Hands-on creation of expectation charts, rule visuals, and support tools for daily routines.
• Emphasizes the role of visuals, modeling, and family partnerships in supporting behavior.
• Provides practical tools for embedding expectations and rules across classroom routines and transitions.

Gain a deeper understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and the important role preschool educators play in supporting young learners with disabilities. In this interactive professional learning session, participants will explore the key components of the IEP journey, including referral, assessment, eligibility, implementation, and ongoing collaboration with families and service providers. 

Outcomes

1. Gain an understanding of phonological awareness.

2. Determine the development of phonological awareness in children aged three to five-and-a-half years.

3. Identify practices to support the development of children’s phonological awareness.

Session Focus:

• Define STEM components in an early childhood classroom.

•       Explores how consistent daily structures support self-regulation, independence, and smoother transitions.

•       Highlights the role of visuals, modeling, and intentional practice in helping children understand “what comes next.”

Follows a 3-part structure:

•       45-Minute Interactive Presentation — Practical strategies for building and teaching classroom schedules and routines.

•       15-Minute Video Reflection — Real-world examples of children engaging in routines with guided discussion.

•       55-Minute Tinker and Take — Hands-on creation of visual schedules, transition supports, and daily routine tools.

Emphasizes how predictable routines reduce challenging behavior and build community.

You’ll leave with ready-to-use tools and strategies to bring calm, confidence, and consistency into your daily schedule.
