CPE/STEAM Practice Based Workshop - They See Me Rollin’: Ramps, Pathways & Playful STEAM

They See Me Rollin’: Ramps, Pathways & Playful STEAM
A Practice-Based STEAM Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

From wobbly rollers to slow-ball challenges, ramps and pathways give children endless ways to tinker, test, and discover. In this practice-based workshop, educators will explore how playful ramp and rolling activities spark curiosity, problem-solving, and STEAM learning in young learners. Together, we’ll experiment with motion, friction, surface types, and design challenges that invite children to roll into deeper learning.

This interactive session follows our proven structure:

  • 45-Minute Engaging Presentation — Discover how ramps and pathways connect to STEAM concepts like force, motion, and problem-solving.

  • 15-Minute Video Reflection — Watch real-world examples of ramp play in action, then reflect on strategies you can use.

  • 60-Minute Tinker & Take — Build hands-on ramp and pathway exploration tools you can bring back to your program the very next day.

You’ll leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of how ramp play builds early science, math, and engineering skills.

  • Ready-to-use activities — from wobbly rollers to slow-ball ramps.

  • Materials and strategies to implement immediately in your classroom or program.

EPiCC Summer Series: ELD Standards Part II: Learning How English Works

Please note: This offering will be held in Glenn County.

One of the California’s Reading & Literature Project signature professional learning programs, Learning How English Works (LHEW) dives deeply into Part II of the California English Language Development Standards, orienting teachers to the theoretical underpinnings of the Standards, breaking down each of the seven standards, and providing linguistically responsive routines that invite students to interact with the language of grade-level disciplinary texts to better understand how writers use language to achieve a range of purposes.

The program prepares teachers to incorporate focused, context-embedded language lessons into their content instruction. More specifically, the LHEW program builds teachers’ capacity to:

  • Consider classroom language demands connected to the CA ELD standards

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the text, sentence, and word level academic language of Part II of the California English Language Development Standards

  • Participate in an instructional routine sequence for teaching language

  • Experience strategies for teaching text, sentence, and word level language

  • Practice the Student Work Analysis Protocol (SWAP) with a focus on language to set learning goals

  • Examine how the protocols, strategies, and routines discussed fit into an existing curriculum

The Learning How English Works professional learning program is appropriate for K-5, 6-12, and Designated ELD teachers, as well as school and district administrators.

Team members may include district leaders overseeing English learner programs, site administrators, instructional coaches, classroom teachers, and specialists such as EL coordinators.

Multilingual Education Leadership Network (mELn)

The Sacramento County Office of Education hosts quarterly meetings for Coordinators of English Learner programs in Sacramento County. Administrators from districts throughout the Capital Service Region (Region 3) are welcome to attend.

The purpose of these meetings is to provide timely, relevant, and reliable information on English Learner legislation such as the Every Student Succeeds Act and policy such as the English Learner Roadmap implementation.

Additionally, meetings offer best practices to meet state and federal accountability requirements and resources for assisting districts to increase student achievement across all subgroups. Staff from the California Department of Education and other agencies are frequently invited to present new information and answer questions. Participants value the opportunity to collaborate and share information with colleagues from other districts. Members are asked to disseminate information provided to them during meetings to the schools in their districts.

New Coordinator Support Session 2025-26

Overview: The New Coordinator Support Sessions will provide an opportunity for new California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and English Language Assessments for California (ELPAC) coordinators (in their job for two years or less) to receive small group support from experienced coordinators.

The LEA assessment coordinator position has a huge learning curve, including many deadlines and few, if any, ‘job alikes’ within a district. The sessions will be guided by the activities listed in the Coordinator Checklist and will include other timely activities. The support sessions will be offered monthly via Zoom. These sessions will be co-facilitated by SCOE and PCOE LEA coordinators. The facilitators will help address questions and offer support. These support sessions are designed to provide new LEA assessment coordinators an opportunity to connect with other coordinators, build community and to ask questions related to their job in a small group setting.

Pyramid Model Practice Based Workshop - Chill Skills: Teaching Our Children to Manage Big Emotions

Chill Skills: Teaching Our Children to Manage Big Emotions
A Pyramid Model Workshop for Early Childhood Educators

Big feelings can be overwhelming for young children — and for the adults supporting them. Learning to calm down and manage strong emotions is a critical life skill. This workshop helps educators teach and model self-regulation strategies, using Tucker Turtle resources and other calming activities to support children in developing the skills they need to cope with stress and frustration.

This is a practice-based workshop with a hands-on structure:

  • 45-Minute Interactive Presentation — Explore evidence-based strategies for teaching calming techniques, supporting children through intense emotions, and embedding Tucker Turtle practices into daily routines.

  • 15-Minute Video Reflection — Watch examples of calming strategies in action and reflect on what makes them effective.

  • 60-Minute Tinker and Take — Create calming toolkits, Tucker Turtle visuals, and classroom materials to help children practice their chill skills.

You’ll leave with:

  • A deeper understanding of why self-regulation is essential for children’s emotional well-being and learning.

  • Practical strategies to guide children through strong emotions with calm, supportive responses.

  • Ready-to-use visuals, calming tools, and Tucker Turtle resources you can bring to your classroom right away.
